what i'm reading: anne of green gables

Anne of Green Gables (Anne of Green Gables, #1)Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The first in the series will forever be my favorite. It characterizes my childhood not because I grew up in the same way or fancy myself to be just like Anne, but because of all the times I spent re-reading this series in all of my favorite crannies and dreamscapes. This is probably the 4th or 5th time I've re-read this book. It's different every time (I know that's a really trite thing to say, but it's the truth). And I suspect this is so because there is just so much scope for imagination in this book.

what i'm reading: a feast for crows

A Feast for Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire #4)A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book took me forever to read, my goodness. I just wasn't as invested in these characters as I've been with the regulars (Bran, Jon, Dany, Tyrion, et al.). But towards the end it starts to redeem itself. What I'm about to say next is probably going to make me sound petty and vindictive. But truthfully, I don't much care because I gained such immense pleasure from observing the beginnings of Cersei's downfall that there's absolutely no way I'm not owning up to it. I suppose this is where I go into how lyrical the narrative is, and the author's artful use of literary devices, etc. (it's all of these things if you're concerned with such). But I'd rather gloat: you're done Cersei! you hear that -- DONE!!

eats: no. 1

The last time I was here, I ordered the beer and cheddar soup with a roasted tomato sandwich half. It tasted alright.

teascapades: no. 2

I'll be back tomorrow (hopefully) with the 3-minute film project I did for my web class and which I hinted at here in my last post. But for right now it's Thursday, which means it's time for "Teascapades" (and all the little children shouted: yay!!)!

This time, we went to Walker's Coffee and Pub, which incidentally is one of the locations where I shot my video (but this was before that). Walker's has an amazing atmosphere for socializing and hardcore coffee drinking or just drinking in general -- it's whatever you're most partial to. As for me, chai was my poison. And Walker's brews a commendable chai poison, I'll tell you that. It was nice and frothy. Mmmmmm, frothy! I loved it! I've been back twice more since then for that chai. Maybe I should try something else on the coffee menu...

Psst: Sorry about the yellowed photographs (if you're not into such things). Walker's has really bad lighting for film photography. Otherwise, I generally like how dim and cozy it is in there.

(I've had the EP this song comes off of in my iTunes library for forever, but I only recently started playing it, and I haven't been able to stop. I mean how -- how -- did I gloss over such awesomeness for so long?!)

teascapades: no. 1

So I drink quite a lot of tea. Like a whole lot. I especially like chai. A whole lot. And I was at a coffee shop recently with Bennie (pictured above; I really should just label this post "gratuitous photos of Bennie") when a brilliant thought occurred to me: what if I went to every coffee spot in Athens specifically to try their chai tea and to document my experience -- I could call the whole venture "Teascapades" (very inspired, I know), and it would be a right proper homage to my obsession with chai. I'm so full of surprises!
Anyway, I thought it would be fitting to start the series with the place that gave birth to and fostered my chai fixation -- Two Story Coffeehouse. I wasn't truly living until I tried the chai latte at Two Story (no joke you guys; I'm deadpan right now). It's so good -- no, it's divine! I don't know what they put in there, but oh-my-goodness it's so good! If you're ever in Athens, Georgia, do yourself a favor and get a chai latte from Two Story. Thank me later.

what i'm watching: submarine

Submarine is a gem of a movie. I stumbled upon it on one of Monique's Film Friday features and knew right away that I needed to see it. It's quirky, and precious, and delicate. And it's dark -- at times claustrophobic. Twice I got really hysterical watching it, and I don't mean that it was funny -- although it was that too -- I mean hysterical in the sense that it elicited this strange, sort of frenzied consideration of myself. I don't know yet how to articulate the feeling... Anyway, watch it if you get a chance. It is incredibly subliminal.

***Photos are screenshots I took while watching the movie.

what i'm reading : inkheart

Inkheart (Inkheart, #1)Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I think I would've liked this book a whole lot more if I hadn't watched the movie first. It has all the ingredients I generally like in books -- magic, whimsy, good-conquering-evil, believable characters, a knack for eliciting laughter, stuff like that -- so I'm a little annoyed that I allowed the movie to take away from my reading experience. Still, I like it well enough to want to read the next book in the series. Hopefully, I'll enjoy all the subsequent books in the serial for not having watched them beforehand.
